Complementary & Alternative Medicine Explained

The word alternative refers to a therapy used in place of conventional medicine. The term complementary implies that the therapy can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine. Integrative medicine results when alternative/complementary therapies are combined with conventional medicine in a fully coordinated setting for patient care. Such an enlightened approach to diagnosis and treatment brings together the best of both approaches, which includes an increased emphasis on disease prevention and general wellness. Each individual type of therapy within complimentary/alternative medicine is called a modality i.e. chiropractic, traditional oriental medicine, herbal therapy, acupuncture, ayurvedic medicine and aromatherapy as well as the disciplines of Western allopathic medicine.
Collectively, complementary therapies are based on the notion that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. This means that each person has a powerful internal life force that strives for health, balance and vitality. Conventional medicine, also called traditional or allopathic medicine, is based on the idea that the body requires outside intervention such as pharmaceutical drugs or surgery to heal. These healing art sciences also share similar principles and common ground in their approach to health and well-being. The tools of these therapies can take the form of wholesome foods, nourishing herbs, enzymes, botanical medicines, water, the healing power of touch, and the gentle manipulative skill of the hands. The job of CAM practitioners is to facilitate and enhance the body's ability to heal, essentially activating the flow of the patient's own vital force. They believe that their role as health educator is an essential component of their work.
Complementary CAM practitioners strive to help patients to help them take an active role in maintaining their own health. Complementary therapies focus strongly on preventing illness while traditional medicine role is concentrating on curing it when it becomes a problem. When diagnosing a condition the practitioner takes into account every aspect of the person's life. Dietary and exercise habits, emotions, temperament, stress level, work life, recent life changes, interpersonal relationships, physical living environment, relationship with nature, and seasonal rhythms are just some of the areas considered.
Complementary therapies are considered less intrusive than conventional medicine. The complementary approach is person-centered while conventional medicine tends to be technology based.       Complementary therapies render patient care in a much more meaningful caring and nurturing manner, for all individuals.
There are several reasons why more and more Americans are gravitating toward complementary therapies. While most people readily admit that conventional medicine has no peer when it comes to emergency intervention and acute care. Many patients are less satisfied with conventional medical approaches to the treatment of long-term or chronic illness. Conventional medicine approaches disease with costly synthetic treatments that may or may not relieve the symptom, but often comes with unpleasant and unwanted side effects.
Today, more and more people are putting an increased emphasis on disease prevention and wellness, and are searching for treatments that are gentle on the body, support will and sensibilities, and nurture the spirit. Natural therapies are designed to promote optional health, to strengthen the body so it can defend itself from disease. People who use natural remedies like the fact that such therapies are virtually free of side effects. A complementary practitioner begins with the least intrusive therapy, moving onto stronger therapies only as needed. In addition, studies have found many natural therapies to be as effective, less dangerous and more economical than conventional treatment.
A growing number of people have become estranged from conventional medical services that are offered in a managed care environment. Many people would characterize the current system as impersonal, intrusive and unsettling. Generally, patients have one to three minutes to give the doctor a complete explanation of their symptoms to their doctor. Yet a recent report that on average patients are interrupted by their doctors 18 seconds into this description. The once supportive family doctor has been replaced by a complex, high pressure technical medical system.
